Why Merrows is named for an Irish mermaid.

A merrow is a mermaid from Irish folklore. In the old stories she lives in deep water and can come up onto dry land, as long as she keeps hold of a small red cap. We named Merrows after her because customer support happens on a shoreline of its own, where a business meets the people who buy from it, and most of the work is getting across.

What a merrow is

A merrow is the mermaid, or merman, of Irish folklore. The English word comes from the Irish murúch, and older forms of it appear in the Lebor Gabála Érenn, the medieval Book of Invasions, as a siren that the legendary ancestors of the Irish meet at sea. Most of what people know about merrows today comes from Thomas Crofton Croker's Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland, whose 1828 volume W. B. Yeats later borrowed from heavily.

Scholars disagree about what the name means. Croker read it as muir, meaning sea, joined to oigh, meaning maid. The reading most scholars now prefer is closer to sea singer, which fits stories where merrows sing.

Croker describes the merrow maidens as gentle and fond of people. Irish families claimed one as an ancestor, including the O'Sullivans of Kerry and the Macnamaras of Clare. Male merrows get green teeth and a red nose, which may be why the stories are mostly about the women.

The red cap

Every merrow story turns on one object. A merrow wears a small red cap called the cohuleen druith, from the Irish cochaillín draíochta, meaning little magic hood. The cap is what lets her dive back through the sea to her home, and if she loses it she cannot go back.

Croker's tale The Lady of Gollerus shows how that plays out. A fisherman named Dick Fitzgerald is standing on the shore of Smerwick Harbour in County Kerry at daybreak when he sees a merrow combing her sea-green hair on a rock. He takes her cap and hides it. She marries him and they have three children. Years later, while he is away, she finds the cap in the house, and after a moment thinking of the children she puts it on and goes back into the sea for good.

Why a mermaid, for customer support

Support work happens between two places. The customer is on the phone, in a chat window, in a text thread or in an email. The answer sits somewhere they cannot see: the order system, the booking calendar, the point of sale, the returns tool. Somebody has to go from one to the other and come back with something useful, and that crossing is most of the job.

That is what the cap stands for in our name. An assistant that can talk but cannot reach your systems is a merrow without her cap, stuck on one shore with nothing to bring back. The useful version hears the question in whatever channel the customer chose, goes and reads the order or checks the calendar, and brings the answer back in that same channel.

The sea singer reading fits as well. Plenty of customers still call, and on a call the whole answer has to be spoken, in a voice good enough that the caller stays on the line.

The part of the story we leave out

The merrow marriage tales are about keeping someone who wants to leave. Dick keeps his wife by hiding what would take her home. A lot of support software behaves the same way: the customer asks for a person, the bot asks them to rephrase, and the way out is somewhere nobody can find it.

Merrows hands the conversation over when it needs a person, because the customer is upset or the question needs judgement. It tells the customer that is happening and passes your team the order along with a summary of what was said, so nobody has to tell the story twice.

How Merrows works

Merrows answers your customers on the phone, in website chat, over SMS and by email, and it keeps one conversation across all of them, so a customer who texts after a call picks up where they left off. It connects to systems your team already uses, such as Shopify for orders or Square for point of sale, and works inside them during the conversation, looking up orders and booking appointments.

Every transcript is there to read, along with which conversations it finished and which went to a person.
